WUFF!
{that's HELLO in dog speak!}
I'm K9! The Kansas K-9 ResQ puppy.
It has come to my attention that our Foster Mom's & Dad's get some of the same questions over and over again - so I'm here to help answer some of those questions! If you want to know something just send me an email and maybe we can post the answer here!
HAPPY SNIFFING!

1. WHERE DO THE DOGS COME FROM THAT KANSAS K-9 RESQ FOSTERS AND ADOPTS TO NEW FAMILIES?
That's a good question! We come from many different places. Our Foster Mom's & Dad's can visit the Wichita Animal Shelter and pull good dogs from death row so they have a chance to have a good life and not be put to sleep. Or sometimes we have owners relinquish (give up) their dogs when they can't keep them anymore - like if their Mom's & Dad's lose their jobs, or maybe the owner get's too old or sick and they have to give up their dog to go into a nursing home. Sometimes a dog wanders up to a home, lost and confused, and the family may call us to help. We can't take in strays, but if they try to find the dog's home and have no luck, they can take the dog to the Animal Shelter and we will go and check out the dog, and possibly put a hold on him to foster in our group. Sometimes other rescues or Humane Societies need help with more dogs than they have room for, and if we have the room in our foster homes we take them in. Rescues try and work together to help save dogs.
2. HOW CAN THE FOSTER HOME "GIVE UP" A DOG THAT IT HAS FOSTERED?
Well, the foster families are really wonderful and a lot of them fall in love with a lot of us, just as we do them. We know that they have saved us from possible death or being hurt. They groom us, feed us, love us, teach us to be great companions. They try very hard to find just the right family for each dog. They do reference checks (call friends and the dog's vet) and they do a home check to be sure that we can't get out of the new yard. When the Foster family feels really good about a potential home and the new family it makes it all the easier to let us go to a new home. We miss them for a while, but then it get's better and better with the new family and we know we have found our forever home. And then, the Foster family can save another doggie out there like me that needs their help.
3. HOW CAN YOU AFFORD TO CARE FOR SO MANY DOGS IN THE RESCUE?
Well, mostly we rely on donations from people with good hearts who love us as much as our foster parents do. We are a non-profit organization, and that means there are no paid positions within our rescue - all of our members volunteer their time to see that we have a chance at a good life, know basic house manners, and have all the things we need - food, medicines, collars, and of course chew bones. (I love the little Munchy sticks the best - they taste great and are easier for me to chew since I've lost some teeth!) The rescue also has a great relationship with the local pet stores: Petsmart and Petco. We receive yearly grants (money to be used for vet bills) from these stores in return for going to the stores often to show dogs, which brings more people into the stores too. And the local stores have been great about supplying dog food and other supplies we need in addition to the grants. Our rescue receives a lot of community support because we are helping to find dogs in need good homes, and reduce overpopulation by promoting spay and neutering.
4. WHY DOESN'T KANSAS K-9 RESQ ADOPT OUTSIDE THE WICHITA AREA?
Our founders set these limits because our all-volunteer staff also work full time jobs. It's time consuming and costly for them to do a home check if they have to drive very far. They like to see the home and backyard to be sure they are placing us in a secure situation. Sometimes we make several trips to the home, or do overnight visits to be sure that we are happy there and the new family wants to adopt us. And too, this way maybe we might get to see our foster family again if our new family takes us in to Petco and Petsmart! That is always a happy time for me (and I've heard other dogs say so too) because we recognize that foster family as saving us, and it was a safe place to be that loved us, and found us a good home. Some people don't understand why they can't adopt from this rescue even if they live in Kansas City - but here's what we think about that - there are so many dogs - good dogs - in those other places that it just wouldn't be right if we went there and kinda took their chance at a good home and the same goes for here - it's hard for us to find good homes but when a dog comes in from another state and takes my potential home - well - honestly that's just not the way us dogs like to do things.
Thanks for stopping by and check back again - maybe we can play some fetch sometime!
